The Problem We are Solving

Uganda hosts over 1,971,983 refugees, the majority originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, with approximately 894,980 of them being young people aged between 12 and 35 years. Despite their numbers and potential, only about 9% of refugee youth are able to access secondary education (OPM 2025). Extreme poverty within refugee settlements remains the primary barrier, forcing many young people to drop out of school and limiting their opportunities for personal and economic growth.

This exclusion exposes youth to heightened risks, including negative peer influence, street involvement, drug and substance abuse, early pregnancy and marriage, theft, and a gradual erosion of moral and social values within the community. Without access to education, skills, or income-generating opportunities, many refugee youth remain trapped in cycles of dependency and vulnerability.

SPOKES AFRICA responds to this urgent challenge by connecting and empowering refugee and host-community youth through entrepreneurial mindset development, social empowerment, and the creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities. By equipping young people with practical skills, confidence, and pathways to self-reliance, SPOKES AFRICA seeks to transform vulnerable youth into active agents of positive change within their communities.
